Master (Yachts) - Navigation, Radar and ARPA Simulator

This Master (Yachts) – Navigation, Radar and ARPA Simulator course builds on the subjects covered in the OOW Navigation and Radar module by refreshing training in chart work, tides and radar, and by introducing other aspects necessary at Master level. There is a greater focus on passage planning with an assessed plan to complete and then execute in the multi-purpose bridge simulator.

Other topics include:

  • Search and rescue procedures in theory and in practice (in the simulator).
  • Ocean navigation, consisting of navigation in ice, ocean sailing and ocean routing.

During the course, 30 hours are spent in the bridge simulator, where exercises are assessed. These include exercises in collision avoidance, planning and monitoring techniques, and blind pilotage.

Students must demonstrate competent use of electronic navigational aids and a thorough understanding and application of the Collision Regulations at command level.

Successful completion of the course and passing the assessment will enable students to take the written exam paper at the end of week two.
