Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training - Operational Level (OOW)

This Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training – Operational Level (OOW) course is undertaken as an integral part of the Deck Officer of the Watch (OOW) certification programme and cannot be booked separately. Advance bookings by OOW candidates are not required.

Candidates for certificates of competency as officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500GT or more must complete this mandatory course during the final stages of their training.

The aims of the training at this level are to equip candidates with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to keep a safe navigational watch and to use radar, automatic radar plotting aids (ARPA), electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS), automatic identification systems (AIS) and other electronic aids to maintain safety of navigation.

On completion the candidate will be able to:

  • interpret and use the information presented by electronic navigation systems, including, but not limited to, radar, ARPA, ECDIS, AIS and other shipboard navigational aids to determine the ship’s position and maintain safety of navigation;
  • apply effective bridge resource management principles and apply leadership and teamworking skills to maintain a safe navigational watch.
