The International Safety Management (ISM) Code provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships at sea and for pollution prevention.
Adopted in 1994 by the International Convention of Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) within Chapter IX and requiring implementation by 1998, its objectives are:
To comply with the ISM Code, every vessel must have a functional Safety Management System (SMS), comprising a number of key elements such as a safety and environmental protection policy, safe operating procedures, defined levels of authority, procedures for internal audits etc.
