ISM Safety Management Systems (SMS) – Overview

The International Safety Management (ISM) Code provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships at sea and for pollution prevention, including the use of ISM Safety Management Systems (SMS).

ISM Safety Management Systems

The ISM Code was adopted by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) – Chapter IX Management – with its objectives being:

  • To ensure safety at sea
  • To prevent human injury or loss of life
  • To avoid damage to the environment, in particular to the marine environment, to the ship and other property

In order to comply with the International Safety Management Code (ISM) Code, every Company must have a functional Safety Management System (SMS), conforming to the requirements of the ISM Code, which includes a safety and environmental protection policy, safe operating procedures, defined levels of authority, procedures for internal audits etc.

Our consulting team of experienced, qualified International Safety Management (ISM) Code auditors understand what needs to be included in a Safety Management System (SMS) and how it is best administered. This professional expertise ensures that the company’s SMS can be effectively developed or reviewed/maintained to comply with applicable mandatory rules and regulations.
